An interesting and rare late 18th-19th century bosuns persuader. This persuader was a form of cosh permitted to be used by the Royal Navy, non-commissioned officers to keep keep sailors in line and to press gang men unwilling to join the service.
The shaft is of Malacca wood, used on early canes of fine quality and only found in Sumatra. The ends are weighted with lead and covered in fine leather work. This example is in excellent condition and a rare survivor of a Navy’s turbulent history.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound.
